Prep, Rockers, Ghetto, High School Cliques 2004
In today's world, walking the halls of high school can be lonely. To
deal with that loneliness, kids tend to flock to a certain group. Yes,
every school has its own variation of groups, but for the most part,
high school groups look the same. Groups can be determined by the way
you dress, the music you listen to, and even your attitude towards school.
A Big Step
High School is a big step, a time for change. For the first time you
and your peers control much of what you do and who you do it with. It
affects everything. How you dress, the music you listen to, and what
you do for fun. Regardless of the time; 1950, 1980, 2004, high school
is when you start to form your own identity.
Preps
Abercrombie says it all. Walking through the hall, preps can be easily
identified by polo shirts, flip-flops, and mini-skirts. Those who shop
at Abercrombie and Hollister are often associated with this title. Though
not a bad thing, preps are one of the most stereo-typed groups in high
school.
Kids assume those in the preppy group are always perky. Most girls are
labeled jappy. Go to a prep party, and you probably wont find them jamming
to fast rap and hip-hop. The music style most listened to among this
group is pop and punk rock.
Rockers
The style is in the title. Watching a local high school band practice,
you can see the typical rocker. Wearing Dickies, converse, and long
hair. Many consider themselves to be somewhat non-conformists. Choosing
to stand out through wild hair colors accompanied by the occasional
tattoo or piercing. Being a rocker means always having your favorite
music with you.
Ghetto
The kids you don't want to mess with - that's the image. Baggy clothes,
silver chains, and rap music is usually what comes to mind when you
think about the ghetto group at your school. The style of clothing in
this group is usually sporty. Jerseys and brands such as Ecco and Sean
John seem to be the norm. Just like any other group in high school,
a certain style of music goes along with this group, usually rap and
hip-hop.
In high school, many people may shift to a different style and enter
new groups. No matter how different we dress or look, we will always
have things in common. We care about our friends, family, and our future.
